Venture by bike to the northern edge of the Rocky Mountains in the remote Northeast Yukon! During WW II, the US army constructed a road to bring oil from the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories to a refinery in Whitehorse. Two years after completion the project was abandoned.
The dirt road is still seasonally maintained by the Canadian government and open for a great riding experience. The winding route takes you through some of the most beautiful north country scenery in this hemisphere. Bike past pristine lakes and listen closely for loons calling. View the scenic splendor of the autumn colors in reds and gold’s, and watch the mystical Northern Lights put on a show while a wolf howls in the distance. Join us for a true wilderness experience!
Itinerary
Day one: (D) The group convenes in Skagway in the afternoon arriving by air or ferry from Juneau. After fitting you to your bike and a brief orientation ride around town, we will drive north into Canada to Johnson’s Crossing. Tonight we stay in a motel for the night.
Day two: (B,L,D) Distance- 47 miles. After breakfast we hop on our bikes, make adjustments and loosen up our cycling legs on some winding dirt roads. Today we will begin our journey out of Skagway, slowly making the transition from city life to the great wide expanses of wilderness that lies ahead. During the evening we relax by a campfire at a quiet Yukon lake.
Day three:
(B,L,D) Distance- 50 miles: Black spruce and willow line the roads as we skirt by small lakes and rivers heading into the Pelly Mountains. The quiet and solitude of this country prevails. Tonight we camp on the shore of Lapie Lake. Sitting by the fire we experience the same inspiration felt by famous local poets and writers such as Robert W. Service.
Day four: (B,L,D) Distance- 40 miles. Gentle rolling hills and curves roll by as we cycle along. The route descends into Lapie Canyon as we near the end of the South Canol Road. We cross the Campbell Highway and make our way to the Village of Ross River, population 350. We spend tonight in a local hotel.
Day five: (B,L,D) Our trail continues north towards the Arctic Circle. We board the Pelly River ferry to cross the opposite shore where the North Canol road begins. We shuttle by van to the north end of the road and camp at Macmillan Pass along the northern edge of the Rocky Mountains.
Day six: (B,L,D) Today is a rest day from biking and is spent exploring the pass and relaxing while enjoying the fall colors. For those wishing to venture further by bike on a day trip, the route continues into the Northwest Territory as the Canol Heritage Trail.
Day seven: (B,L,D) Distance- 40 miles. Back on the bikes we drop into an open valley with the Itsi Mountains to the east. Rusty vehicle relics from the WWII era line the road as we roll on by. We cross the Macmillan River many times as we descend the pass. Tonight we camp overlooking the Macmillan Valley.
Day eight: (B,L,D): Distance- 35 miles. The road traverses the remains of an old forest fire that swept through the region. Firewood lines the way as we leave the Continental Divide behind. We make camp for the night at Dragon Lake.
Day nine: (B,L,D): Distance- 65 miles. The last day of riding takes us back to Ross River, where we spend the night reflecting on the beautiful country we’ve traveled. Sharing the experience is a big part of the trip and we will all have some great stories to share. We stay at a hotel in Ross River for the evening.
Day ten: (B,L,D): We get an early start for the drive south to Whitehorse and then Skagway, arriving in the later afternoon. We check into a B&B in Skagway. You will have time to explore the town before meeting the group for dinner at a fantastic local restaurant where, you guessed it, fish is always on the menu!
Day eleven: (B): We enjoy a final breakfast together at the B&B before saying our goodbyes. The day is free to explore Skagway on your own and complete any final souvenir shopping before heading home or on to your next Alaskan adventure!
