Foothill culture to high mountain adventure and the opportunity to visit Annapurna 1 base camp

Nepal FAQs

On every Eastern Mountain Sports trip, we try to combine the best of what each area has to offer – putting together trips that are not just memorable, but also beautifully scenic. We feel that cultural and geological diversity is what makes the Annapurna Sanctuary trip so special.

First you'll fly into Kathmandu and will be met at the airport by our friendly staff. Next you'll be taken to a comfortable hotel in the Thamel district of Kathmandu and dinner that night will be a social get together, so that everyone can get acquainted. The next day, a guide will take you out for a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu's cultural and religious highlights.

Our trek starts with the short flight to Pokhara, the third largest city in Nepal. Pokhara sits on a picturesque lake which reflects the Annapurna range like a mirror in its waters. From the airport, we set off by automobile to the start of our trek, which is the Annapurna foothill village of Nayapul. The trail winds through terraced farms and mysterious valleys of bamboo. In the distance, snow capped peaks get closer with each footstep as we hike toward our goals of Ghorapani and Poon Hill. From Ghorapani, a view of the entire Annapurna Himal is spread out before you, with peaks white against the dark blue sky. If you're an early riser, it's only a 45-minute hike to the summit of Poon Hill for that once in a lifetime photo. As the sun rises, the mountains turn from dark blues to blazing oranges and reds - until finally turning bright white against the cobalt blue sky.

After Ghorapani, we hike along a ridgeline for 4 days with many more impressive views as we follow the Annapurna Himal to the entrance of the Annapurna Sanctuary. You will be staying for one night in this amphitheater of snow and ice, which gives you the opportunity for awesome views of Annapurna I (26,539 ft.), Machhupuchhre (22,950 ft.) and Fang (25,083 ft.).

Once finished, we’ll head back to the warmth of the foothills and finally back to Pokhara. We’ll spend one night relaxing at this lakeside city, known as a trekker's paradise. The weather here is pleasant all year round and boats can be hired to take you around Lake Phewa. Mirrored in the lake are the Annapurna Himal and along the shoreline are many different species of bird life, along with tropical plants. Everyone should feel rested and relaxed after our visit to Pokhara.

We will return to Kathmandu by plane for one more night, where you’ll be free to shop and wander the city at your leisure.

On the morning of your departure, a staff member will escort you back to the airport with final instructions.
