Day 1- Arrival at trailhead, 12pm
Today we will meet in the afternoon and go over gear before beginning our hike. We will check over packs and divide up food to carry for dinner and the next days breakfast. The route we take will be decided together as a group. Your guide will have a few options in mind and will help to make a decision based on the overall fitness of the group and weather conditions. You should bring your own snacks and plenty of water for the days hike. We plan to hike for about 3 or 4 hours and arrive at the hut before dark. We will begin preparing dinner after arriving at the hut and you will have some free time in between arriving and dinner to pick out your bunk for the night and change into warm clothes. After dinner you will be free to relax, mingle with other guests or take a short walk to the lake. There is very limited lighting after dark so be sure to bring a good headlamp with plenty of batteries.
Breakfast will be provided on day 2 and dinner on day 1 at the hut. You will need to pack a lunch and snack for both days out on the trail. Please let us know ahead of time if you have any specific dietary requirements or preferences for meals provided at the hut. Kitchens are self service and meals will be prepared by your guide. You will have access to the kitchen if you would like to bring your own snacks and beverages. Lunche and snack ideas include we trail mix, wrap with meat and cheese and energy bars.
A great trip for those looking for a weekend mountain getaway. Just off rt. 93, Lafayette Campground is the starting point for those making the hike to AMC's Lonesome Lake Hut. This hut is an ideal base camp for warm weather hiking and winter snowshoeing. Surrounded by 4,000ft peaks and varying terrain, this destination is great for any level outdoor enthusiast. The hut is situated on a beautiful lake surrounded by nothing but miles of trees and open space. Inside the hut you will find many of the same amenities as home, but with rustic decor. Kitchen, dining area, bunks and restrooms are all provided. In the winter, running water is shut off to prevent pipes freezing, but hut crews boil water daily for clean drinking. While in the hut you'll find shelves of books and games to keep even the most restless hiker entertained. Each days hike will be decided as a group with the help of your guide.
Day 2-
After a relaxing night sleep we will rise and join for a backcountry breakfast in the dining area. Over breakfast we will plan our hiking route for the day. After packing and getting ready, we say goodbye to Lonesome Lake Hut and head out. Please plan on being back around 2pm. Make sure you let your guide know if you need to be back by a certain time.
Nestled against the flank of New Hampshire's Cannon Mountain, this year-round hut offers a spectacular view of the Franconia Range across a clear glacial tarn. The westernmost hut on the Appalachian Trail, Lonesome Lake Hut is an hour's hike from the road and the perfect place for families, novice hikers and snowshoers, or anyone seeking mountain views from the water's edge.
The history of Lonesome Lake Hut began in 1876 when author W.C. Prine built fishing cabins in the area. In 1929 the state of New Hampshire bought the surrounding land and invited the AMC to run the camp. Lonesome Lake Hut has certainly lived up to its name and has been one of the quietest of the huts. Today the hut is very popular with families and other hikers looking for easy access to a backcounty experience. The main building has been winterized with a new insulated roof, new shingles, interior paneling and woodstove. The caretakers are very excited to talk with overnight guests and day visitors alike about the surrounding environment, local winter wildlife, astronomy, and more. As always, the wintry view of Franconia Ridge across Lonesome Lake is simply breathtaking sight!
