Understanding the Difficulty of Each Trip

At Eastern Mountain Sports we always stress that you select a trip appropriate to your abilities and fitness. Please pay attention to the information supplied about each trip. This information will include an overview describing the adventure – along with dates, nights camping, nights spent in hotels, total trip days, and the difficulty for each trip. Our grading system is also used to help you understand how physically demanding each trip will be.

INTERNATIONAL HIKING AND TREKKING ADVENTURE GRADING SCALE

EASY: 3 - 5 hours (3 - 6 miles) per day over varied terrain, sightseeing or birdwatching. Maximum altitude reached is 9,000 ft. with the majority of time spend below 7,000 ft.

Anyone in good health, with an average level of fitness can enjoy this type of trip. You should be used to hiking on weekends for longer periods of time with hills, or using a Stairmaster (or similar) weekly.

MODERATE: 5 - 7 hours (4 - 8 miles) per day over hilly and steep terrain. Maximum altitude reached will be 14,000 ft. with a couple of days at this altitude. Most of the time you will be hiking at 9,000 ft. - 13,000 ft. or below.

You should be in good physical fitness and be used to a weekly workout routine. Age is not a factor just good health and fitness. You should be used to camping out and hiking regularly.

STRENUOUS: 6 -10 hours (6 - 11 miles) per day depending on terrain. Some days will be spent hiking over high mountain passes, with other steep and hilly terrain. Some treks will involve crossing glacial passes at over 17,000 ft. The maximum altitude is 18,300 ft., which will involve a optional hike to a summit for views. Some of the time will be spent between altitudes of 15,000 ft. and 17,000 ft.

To enjoy a strenuous trek, you need to plan a fitness routine, or already be involved in a daily fitness regimen. You should be able to hike for long periods of time over steep terrain without difficulty.

DOMESTIC HIKING AND ADVENTURE TRAVEL GRADING SCALE

EASY: 2 - 4 hours (3 - 4 miles) per day over varied terrain, day hiking, sightseeing or bird watching. Maximum altitude reached would be 6,000 ft. with the majority of time spend below 2,000 ft.

Maximum altitude reached could be 14,000 ft. as a day hike, not as an overnight. Most of the time you will be hiking at 4,000 ft. - 13,000 ft., or below.

Some hikes will involve crossing glacial passes at over 12,000 ft. The maximum altitude is 14,300 ft., which will involve an optional hike to a summit for views. Some of the time will be spent between altitudes of 10,000 ft. and 12,000 ft.

To enjoy a strenuous trek, you need to plan a fitness routine, or already be involved in a daily fitness regimen. You should be able to hike for long periods of time over steep terrain without difficulty.

MOUNTAINEERING GRADING SCALE

All trips that involve mountaineering are in the “Strenuous” category, since a large part of the trek is spent at extreme altitude and under glacial conditions. The trekking section of any mountaineering trek will range from Easy to Strenuous.

Each peak we attempt to summit is in the official “Trekking Peak” category. They stand between 18,326 ft. to 21,825 ft. high. Out of the 18 official trekking peaks, 5 have only been climbed successfully by a handful of people. The name “Trekking Peak” is misleading, as knowledge of at least basic mountaineering skills and very good physical fitness are necessary to attempt one of these treks.

MULTI-SPORT TRIPS

Any trip that we offer that has various outdoor activities involved will require a mix of fitness to enjoy the experience. The most important thing to remember is that you can “opt out” on any section you don’t feel up to participating in.

KAYAKING TRIPS

BEGINNER: Have little or no experience.

INTERMEDIATE: Should understand basic kayaking skills and can handle most situations in controlled environment.

ADVANCED: Can handle a fully loaded boat, work with compass and mapping, not just visual aids and can handle rough water.
